How to tell a story to children

Whether you are telling a story to a group or classroom of children, you will realize that it requires some skills in order to make the stories more appealing to them. Unlike adults, children love listening to stories since it allows them to enter and live in worlds they have never even seen. Stories also helps to shape their characters. While some people find it difficult telling inspirational friendship stories , for some it comes naturally. However, anyone can learn how to tell a story to children in a more engaging way.

Before you begin your story telling, you can first practice reading the book so that you know the keywords used and most importantly the intonation in different paragraphs. Remember our tone actually tells more about you than words can. You should always hold the book facing the children since they will always want to follow the story with the pictures. However, this is not required if you are telling your own story.

Always try keeping some eye contact with children as you tell the story, even if it means looking at them between the pages. Let them also participate in it by asking them regular questions concerning the story. For children, physical participation is always the best way to get their full attention. Better still, if there is a chorus at the end, they can always chant it along.

As you tell the story, attempt to imitate the different voices for different characters to enable the children know the character that is currently speaking. Don’t fear doing it just because you can’t since even if it comes out badly the kids won’t probably notice it, or will think you are just being humorous.

Children generally tend to like stories that relate to their development. The youngest need the most concern on the above issues. They need bolder pictures and more contrast between the characters. Therefore, as you go out to get an idea of the appropriate stories for a particular group of children, remember to choose the stories that they love and also deals with their issues. However, even if you present them with your own chosen story keeping in mind the above methods, they will still love the stories as well as you
